Who is he?

Eugenio Hasler (Rome, April 8th 1982) is a former employee of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State, from August 1st 2005 until May 31st 2006 working at the Philatelic and Numismatic Office and from June 1st 2006 until March 31st 2017 at the Office of the General Secretary.

Biography

Born in Rome on April 8th 1982, son of Maria Michela Petti, an Italian freelance journalist until 2014 native of Amalfi and Peter Albert Hasler, sub-officer of the Pontifical Swiss Guards, native of Montlingen, a little village in the cantone of St. Gallen.
Native swiss citizen, vatican citizen for residence and Italian citizen form mother side, he grows up in the barracks of the Pontifical Swiss Guards in the Vatican City State.

Formation and career

He first attends the Swiss School in Rome and moves later to the German School in Rome, where he achieves the high school diploma in 2001.

He begins his academic education at the University Maria Santissima Assunta (LUMSA) in Rome and suspends his studies to work with a full-time permanent contract at the Augustinianum Patristic Institute of Rome, where he works for 9 months.

In July 2005, he receives the job offer from the Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State, beginning from August 1st of the same year.

In June 2006, he is tasked with the realization and management of the institutional Internet Web Portal of Vatican City State (www.vaticanstate.va).

His later duties comprise the Coordination of the Events for the Governatorate of the Vatican City State.

On December 21st 2013 he is nominated by the Cardinal President of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State ‘Coordinator of the General Secretariat’ (coordinating but without decisional power the following Offices: State Archive; Internal Audit Office; Events Coordination Office; Garden and Urban Cleaning Service). Since 2006, he further served as personal secretary of the following General Secretaries:

  • Bishop Renato Boccardo
  • Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò
  • Bishop Giuseppe Sciacca
  • Bishop Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, L.C. (until March 28th 2017)

On March 27th he receives a notice of meeting by H.H. Pope Francis-
On March 28th he has a meeting with H.H. Pope Francis and – without any official accusation – he is removed from all his duties and is not considered any longer as an employee of the Vatican City State.
Several Italian newspapers reported about the ‘strange’ case and about the lack of any official explanation for this papal decision.
